The White City in Orange

April 10, 2008

Architecture is the topic of the next installment of The W.H. Stark House Lecture Series, part of the Orange in Bloom spring events in Orange, Texas. Jay Firsching of ARCHITEXAS will present The White City in Orange: How the World’s Columbian Exposition Changed the Face of American Architecture on April 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Firsching, Associate and Preservation Specialist with ARCHITEXAS, will highlight Victorian architecture, the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and the change to Beaux Arts style of architecture that resulted from the expo. The First Presbyterian Church in Orange is built in the Beaux Arts style and it was at this expo that Frances Ann Lutcher bought the first windows for the church, which she commissioned in 1908.

ARCHITEXAS is a preservation-based architecture firm currently restoring the First Presbyterian Church. Firsching serves as ARCHITEXAS’ primary researcher and architectural historian and assists the firm’s architects in the analysis of historic buildings and sites, and in the development of appropriate approaches to their restoration.

Following the lecture, a reception will be held in the Carriage House, located behind The W.H. Stark House at 610 W. Main Avenue.
