Japanese Maiji Era Satsuma Vase
This porcelain vase depicts a monkey scene out of polychrome enamels and gilding. On the neck, shoulder, and foot, the monkeys are cavorting amidst vines and blue gasu flowers. On the belly area is an intricate low relief of monkeys eating grapes and playing with flowers. Each monkey is unique with human-like facial expressions.
