Phoebus and the Hours with Aurora

Phoebus and the Hours with Aurora

Phoebus – meaning “bright” – is an epithet for the Greek and Roman god Apollo. This shell cameo features the charioteer Phoebus-Apollo, the dancing hours being led by Aurora (the dawn). It is modeled after the Italian artist Guido Reni, whose work Phoebus and the Hours (circa 1613) is in the Rospigliosi Palace in Rome. The cameo is framed by an open-worked acorn design in gold.
