Tea/Coffee Service

    Tea/Coffee Service

This eight-piece, sterling silver service was manufactured by Gorham Manufacturing Company, Providence, Rhode Island, in the elaborate modified Beaux Arts Louis XVI pattern, circa 1910. The handcrafted, one-of-a-kind service includes ivory insets and has an overall palmette motif. The tea service includes a coffee pot, a teapot and kettle on a stand with a spirit burner, a waste bowl, a covered sugar bowl, and a creamer on a large handled oval tray, which includes a custom glass top. In addition to the tea service, this suite of silver includes four candlesticks, a pair of covered food servers or terrines, several serving trays, a gravy boat on a stand, a sauce boat, a syrup pot on a stand and a pair of salt dishes and pepper casters, all in the modified Louis XVI pattern.

According to records, Miriam Stark commissioned the service through local Orange jeweler Joe Lucas. Gorham archives show the receipts for the chasing, repoussé and finishing work. The receipts also provide the chaser names and actual number of hours worked on each piece.
